French Genealogy From Afar is our first book. It is a guide – built on numerous posts from this blog -- that has as its focus the very first steps of research into French ancestry, mostly via the Internet. All of the posts have been updated and, in many cases, enhanced. All of the website addresses have been updated.
The Section Headings are :
- Getting Ready
- History and Geography
- Location! Location!
- Departmental and Communal Archives
- Researching on the Departmental Archives’ Websites
- A Bit of Military History
- Military Records Online
- The National Archives Databases
- The Genealogy Community and Commercial Databases
Giving historical insights, keys to unlocking the French archives system, invaluable French websites, ways to develop a research methodology, problem solving advice, French Genealogy From Afar is also, of course, in our usual, pert style.

Readers' reviews:
"My French Genealogy From Afar arrived yesterday and I am very impressed. Well done! I have been (trying to) research my surname in France for 20 years or so so know a fair bit about the NMS records.......you have opened my eyes to to a lot more information that I can search. Love your slightly tongue in cheek humour at times too. It lightens what can be a rather heavy subject."
"The book arrived last Saturday, right in the midst of out-of-state company and family dinners, sightseeing, etc. Packaging was excellent and the book was pristine. Kudos to the shipper. I’m finally reading it – and finding good stuff to add to my basic knowledge of Alsacien/Germanic & French gen. Actually getting much info on the rest of France, for which I’m grateful. It’s also pleasing to me to see that I already am conversant with topics you’ve included: for instance, the Cassini maps; but I’m also grateful to be able to expand even on those topics! Your book is well worth the price."
"I wanted to let you know that your book has helped me tremendously with my mother's French line who immigrated to Texas in the 1840s. With the help of the websites you discussed and other hints, I was able to trace them back into the 1600s. I couldn't have done it without your book, as I speak and read no French. .... This family has long been a brick wall for me, and breaking through it has been a dream for several decades. Thank you for what you did for English-speaking researchers with French ancestors."
