The Big Field : A Child's Year
The Big Field is a lovely picture book for all children and an important addition to resources for the Early Years curriculum. Patterned after books of hours, it is a month-by-month account of life on a farm at the edge of the Atlantic Rainforest in South America. Birds, flowers, butterflies, and bugs abound in a warm and gentle story of three young children living on their grandmother’s farm and learning from her the seasonal changes and simple activities that often mirror those of children in the northern hemisphere. The subtext of the grandmother’s determination to reforest the big field of the title gives hope and a way forward to young children as they learn about nature in the modern world.
No other book exists to introduce young children to the seasons and nature in this part of the southern hemisphere, and precious few are available to teachers to use in the classroom. Order from Amazon.com or from Lulu.com.
Reviews of The Big Field
"...a beautiful journey...Blending art and lilting prose, "The Big Field" is a strong addition to children's picturebook collections..."
Midwest Book Review, Reviewer's Choice
"This is a book for adults, children and everyone in between. Truly a wonderful book that is so deservedly in print. So many trite, ridiculous books for children and I'm glad this is quite the opposite! If you want to raise a child with an appreciation for good literature, this is a must!"
Julie Schoerke of www.goodreads.com
"In the expansive world of children’s literature where it seems like we have already “seen it all before”, The Big Field : A Child's Year Under the Southern Cross, by Anne Morddel is surprisingly unique. Immediately upon holding the book, I was drawn in by the folk art style illustrations that remind me of the beautiful tapestries ... The story is even more unique."
Heather on Diapered Daze and Knights
"The Big Field is a colorful, cheerful exploration of the seasons. The beautiful illustrations by the author reflect the playful text. It is an excellent way to teach northern hemisphere children about southern hemisphere seasons."
Ron Harton on Nature Writing
"This book is so rich with learning opportunities that you could spend a great deal of time reading and re-reading it, and still come up with something different to talk about every time."
Anita Book
"The pictures are lovely...I think this book would be great for a child who loves nature and learning about new places."
